ACTA, IP & a couple more sites worth watching.

With the summer just around the corner, time is zipping by quite fast these days.

That said, I noticed that there is a lot of Intellectual Property activities going on. Canada, as you may well know, is a really bad guy when it comes to piracy stuff, according to all the **AA. Now, it was leaked that the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has been working in the background behind closed doors to come up with the most draconian measures about how the Entertainment industry is dealing with the New Digital model…I think the Internet World and the infamous Digital Contents is completely crashing down…

Still Alive and getting close to finishing….

Well, believe it or not, I’m still working on the painting project!!! This last part is the bathroom, and these can be bring on real headaches… ‘Nough said on that subject. Will be sone in the next couple of days as I include cleaning the whole place up as well…

I have to be honest though, as I don’t really dedicate 100% of my time on the painting project, as you can pretty well imagine! I’d rather spend more time enjoying the weather, etc. etc…

Some more updates…

Even though one has retired from active IT work, there are still an awful lot of things going on around and there are still a lot of lessons to be learned.

First, my painting project is nearing its end Real Soon Now as I suspect I will be completed by tomorrow. As usual, there are some lessons learned in just about we undertake in life. For this painting project, I realised that painting the door frames and the baseboards white is an exercise for which I may (most likely probably) not have the patience I used to have… Not sure quite… I will have to let that sit for a while, while I’m busy cleaning up all the hardware from previous umpteen paint jobs before I put these back.

Wake-up time: Wikepedia criticism, Overstock.com and “Naked Short Selling”

One of the project that I wanted to participate in when I started my new life after a career, was to do some good for society and perhaps become involved in helping out on Wikipedia. This could be a way to Give Back to society…

Thus, I started to research details into Wikipedia… Fortunately or unfortunately, I started to run across a lot of “Negatives” about Wikipedia, which I was not expecting! Wow! I could not believe it! Best place to start is The Wikipedia Review. This is fascinating stuff! All I can add is that all these events and going-ons would make a great Sociology Thesis for someone!

Update on Ubuntu 8.04…

I’m in the continuing process of evaluating Ubuntu as an alternate to MS XP/Vista.

There are still a few things that are not quite up to snuff:

  • Great improvements on Firefox add-ins for videos: lots of “restricted drivers” are being installed. 7.10 had issues there…
  • Stand-By and Hibernate both complain a lot when turning the laptop back on…
  • Ubuntu and Applications are quite sluggish on the Dell C610 LapTop. WinXPP is much faster on same platform…
  • I like date and time formats in the form of: YYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss as in 2008-05-06 17:27:32. However, I had to set the “International Settings” as “English (DK)” in order to get it. English (CA) does not!
  • Last, but the most annoying: French-Canadian Keyboard Mapping is still not mapped properly!!!

Just installed Ubuntu 8.04 last night: trying it now…

One of my draft “Comment” at the present is about “Is Linux Being Ready for the DeskTop”, i.e. besides Linux being the best server environment, is Linux DeskTop/LapTop ready to take on the XPs, Vistas and Mac of this world?

Since I have been tinkering with **N**X for quite a while, the best distribution for installation so far, has been Ubuntu. Bar none! But once installed, the actual functionalities are … Well, I’ll leave that for the upcoming comment.
