Just installed Ubuntu 8.04 last night: trying it now…
One of my draft “Comment” at the present is about “Is Linux Being Ready for the DeskTop”, i.e. besides Linux being the best server environment, is Linux DeskTop/LapTop ready to take on the XPs, Vistas and Mac of this world?
Since I have been tinkering with **N**X for quite a while, the best distribution for installation so far, has been Ubuntu. Bar none! But once installed, the actual functionalities are … Well, I’ll leave that for the upcoming comment.
In the mean time, I have 8.04 installed and I’m now working with it. Suffice to say that the installation was a breeze, as in 7.04:
- The PCMCIA D-Link Wireless card was picked up just fine (as it did in 7.10), connected just fine, and has NOT disconnected at all since,
- The sound card was picked up just fine,
- The Video card, showed up no sweat!
Now let’s play with this…
Just a preview so far:
- Installed Browser is Firefox 3 Beta 5: much more stable than Windows’ version
- Surprises of all: I can now do YouTube: under 7.10 I could never get that going properly… I needed a couple of “Restricted” codecs to install, but it works this time.
Regards.
