Some more updates…

Even though one has retired from active IT work, there are still an awful lot of things going on around and there are still a lot of lessons to be learned.

First, my painting project is nearing its end Real Soon Now as I suspect I will be completed by tomorrow. As usual, there are some lessons learned in just about we undertake in life. For this painting project, I realised that painting the door frames and the baseboards white is an exercise for which I may (most likely probably) not have the patience I used to have… Not sure quite… I will have to let that sit for a while, while I’m busy cleaning up all the hardware from previous umpteen paint jobs before I put these back.

Second, I’m still using the Ubuntu laptop: I still can’t surf anywhere where there are any videos: it does not work properly. Hence the idea of Ubuntu for Everyone is quite off my radar at this point, don’t know. Well, one thing is for sure: the idea of Linux being fast on any platform is somewhat distorted. I agree that Linux (the kernel and the command utility set) is fast and can run efficiently on just about any platform. But add any X11 based GUI on top of it and you need some real horsepower under it all. The Dell C610 has a PIII 1-Ghz processor with 512 KB RAM and you have to be careful what you run: don’t overload it. These boxes are really much faster with XP-Pro… Let’s continue the evaluation…

And third for today. As as I am going a bit slow at this Blog stuff, today I’m adding a couple more of my regularly visited links:

These two sites, I make sure I visit them just about every day. Ars Tecnica is where I keep a watchful eye on events associated with Intellectual Property and other things in the tech world. Groklaw is interesting as its Roll is mostly on the SCO lawsuits and bankruptcy. If ever you wanted to know everything about the nitty-gritty details of this facinating case, this is the place to go. But the first I look for on that site is the Groklaw Latest News Picks column: this is where the good stuff shows up!

That is it for now… Back to Salt Mines…

Regards!
